การใช้ Pronoun (คำสรรพนาม)
pronoun คือ สรรพนามที่ใช้แทนคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ
noun คือ คำนาม คำนามไม่ว่าจะทำหน้าที่ประธาน (subject) หรือกรรม (object) ไม่เปลี่ยนรูปแต่ pronoun เมื่อเป็นประธานและกรรมอาจมีรูปต่างกัน

1) ใช้ self แสดงการกระทำต่อตนเอง (Reflexive)
ประธาน และ คำ self จะต้องเป็นสิ่งเดียวกัน
He saw himself in the mirror. (He และ himself เป็นคนเดียวกัน)
She talked to herself. (She และ herself เป็นคนเดียวกัน)
ประธาน และ คำ self จะต้องเป็นสิ่งเดียวกัน
He saw himself in the mirror. (He และ himself เป็นคนเดียวกัน)
She talked to herself. (She และ herself เป็นคนเดียวกัน)
2) ใช้ self แสดงการเน้น (emphatic) เมื่อต้องการเน้นประธานของประโยค จะวาง self ไว้หลังประธานหรือวางไว้ท้ายประโยคก็ได้ เช่น
He himself saw the accident.
= He saw the accident himself.
เมื่อต้องการเน้นคำอื่น ต้องวางไว้ติดกับคำนั้นๆ
We talked to the principal himself. (เราพูดกับตัวอาจารย์ใหญ่เองเลย (ไม่ได้พูดกับคนอื่น))
He himself saw the accident.
= He saw the accident himself.
เมื่อต้องการเน้นคำอื่น ต้องวางไว้ติดกับคำนั้นๆ
We talked to the principal himself. (เราพูดกับตัวอาจารย์ใหญ่เองเลย (ไม่ได้พูดกับคนอื่น))
3) ใช้ by + คำ self เพื่อแสดงความหมายว่า โดยลำพัง โดยไม่มีใครช่วย
He made this table by himself. (เขาทำโต๊ะตัวนี้โดยลำพัง) (ไม่มีใครช่วย)
จงเปรียบเทียบ ประโยคนี้ He made this table himself. (เขาทำโต๊ะตัวนี้ด้วยตัวเขาเอง)
He made this table by himself. (เขาทำโต๊ะตัวนี้โดยลำพัง) (ไม่มีใครช่วย)
จงเปรียบเทียบ ประโยคนี้ He made this table himself. (เขาทำโต๊ะตัวนี้ด้วยตัวเขาเอง)
